School Council

What is School Council?

Lady Royd’s School Council is a group of children who meet once a fortnight to discuss issues within the school. There is one School Councillor from each class from Year 1 to Year 5 and a Head Boy and Head Girl from Year 6.

Why do we have a Children’s School Council?

• To empower children to have a voice
• To improve the school according to the children's point of view.
• To make sure everyone has a platform to voice their opinions.

How Pupils Become a School Councillor?

At the beginning of each year, children can nominate themselves. Nominees present to their class the reasons why they would make a good councillor. Each class votes for their councillor.

What we do in the Meetings

Each meeting focuses on an issue or topic, we discuss as councillors how to move forward with these issues. Each councillor then meets with their class to discuss ideas about changes and improvements to the school.

We carry out surveys and votes within our classes so that everyone's opinion is represented. These opinions are then fed back to the council and the opinion of the majority is taken forward.

School Council Roles and Responsibilities

• Show visitors around the school.
• Be in charge of organising themed events.
• Attend school council meetings fortnightly.
• Provide a voice for all pupils to put forward their ideas.
• Speak to pupils about requests and ideas to improve our school.
